I have a 1986 460ci that wont time right. I bring it up TDC on the compression stroke, lower distributor shaft on number cylinder, have my plug wires were there supposed to be but it wont start at 0 degrees. It only starts at about 15 degrees advanced and will only be driveable at 20 degrees advanced. I replaced the timing chain , it was original, still had the nylon strings. I had several tecks look at it an none of them can figure it out. Will a 460 valve cover fit on a 429? I assumed it was a 460 based on the valve cover sticker that said so. Did i put a 460 chain on a 429? Why wont this damm thing time?

429s and 460s use the same timing chain.

What do you mean by, "lower distributor shaft on number cylinder?" Does that mean you are postioning the distributor rotor where #1 is on the cap and then installing the distributor into the engine block? If so, then you are probabaly a tooth off on the distributor positioning.

If you mean soemthing else, then please elaborate.
