460 oil restrictors

Hi.

I'm rebuilding a 460 drag engine and want to install a set of oil restrictors. I've been told that the moroso restrictor kit for a 351 Cleveland is used in the 460. The 4 * 5/16" cam oil gallery plugs that go in the main webs at 2, 3, 4 and 5 are obvious, but where does the 3/8" plug go? On the Cleveland the 3/8" plug is installed in No.5 web on the left hand side (oil filter side). The Cleveland has left and right oil galleries on the No.5 web feeding the lifter galleries on each side of the block. The 460 oiling system looks different. There is only one main oil gallery coming from the lifter gallery into No.5 web (ie: same as all the other webs).

Hope this makes sense. Does anyone know the answer? Where does the 3/8" plug go? Is there anything else I need to know about oil restrictors in a 460?

Cheers

Ian

Well, I know that the 385 Series engine oiling system is indeed different from the 335 Series, but I have never used that kit in a 460. I do know that the oil 351C gallery (where that 3/8-16 plug would be used) is non-existant in the 429/460.

The 429/460 oiling system feeds the 5 mains from the passenger side lifter gallery. Also, the passenger side lifter galllery's oil path then hops the lifter valley (near the rear) and continues on to the driver's side lifter gallery. This crossover point is a good place to install an oil restrictor so that the driver's side lifter gallery is restricted, but the 3/8-16 plug is too big for the 429/460. DO NOT restrict oil to the passenger side lifter gallery since this gallery also feeds the mains.

Well, since you ask....yes: Do not use them. Of course there are two schools of thought on this subject, but I adamantly oppose the use of cam bearing restrictors in these engines. (The driver's side lifter valley restrictor is okay.) I have known bone stock 460's to spin the cam bearings at startup even though the bearings are unrestricted. Why would you want to restrict oil to a given location when you are trying to send more oil somewhere else??? If you want to send more oil to the mains, then unrestrict the path to the mains.

Please toss the cam bearing oil restrictors and keep the cam bearing bearings well lubricated. For more info on 429/460 block oiling mods, click HERE
