Re: big block engine numbers
Sometimes there is an aluminium tag bolted under the coil (usually this tag is gone) or a decal stuck to the rocker cover. These can tell you quite a bit about the motor.
The casting number is behind the starter and the head castings are easily seen on the head.
The build date is usually stamped on the front of the block on the right hand side of the waterpump ,or the left side of pump from your point if you are standing in front of engine ,on the flat faced area but will be covered in paint.
They sometimes stamp a partial VIN of the vehicle it was in at the rear of the block where the bell housing mates to the block. On the top but at the rear of the intake mani. You can see it if you climb over the engine and look down behind the mani. Probably need a torch and don't be surprised if there is none there.
Look for whatever numbers you can find and where they were located on the engine.
I'm not sure if I can help with all but hopefully some will be meaningful.
