What's the intended use for the car - street, drags, circuit, or "Wow" factor at shows? What's the budget. A few friends of mine have 429s and 460s in their Cobras and they're happy with the end result. My small block with supercharger and intercooler would weigh about the same as a big block, and the weight certainly isn't a problem.
Guys in the States are offering 545 cube short blocks for around $2500USD. That seems like the best value for money, and you can lope around without having to rev the piss out of the motor. Big performance / little maintenance.
Attached pic is a 472 cube big block with Motec injection. The working side pipes sure sound the part
