Re: Ford 460 in 1996 motorhome

Well...sounds like you might just have to deal with it like it is. First, I would suggest a good tune-up and compression check. Have the injectors cleaned by a pro (Involves hooking the fuel rail up and pushing a cleaning solution through them). Have the catalytic convertor checked out and replace the o2 sensor. Depending on the mileage, the engine itself is probably in good shape. It probably just needs gone over real good. With proper care it should go 200,000 without any major problems. Be prepared to spend a few hundred dollars. You could do the tune-up, but you will have to find someone with the equipment or have a dealer do the injectors and check for codes. You could also change the o2 sensor with a socket designed for it. Considering gas prices right now a few hundred in a thourough tune-up would end up saving you some money. Along the same note, those things are not known for gas mileage, but 6 seems a bit low. I would think 10 to 12 would be more in line. Then of course if all that fails to improve your situation then you can swap for a 7.3 turbo charged diesel. JK lol. But really those things should all have a turbo diesel of some kind in them.

What year, what transmission.I had a 1904 with a 460 overdrive transmission.I put headers on it and a cold air intake. Then I had a chip burnt for it and I went from 5 miles to the gallon to 7.9 almost 8.It had tons of power.I also put a transmission contriller on it which help it out too.Good Luck!!

cool Re: Ford 460 in 1996 motorhome

Unfortunately, short of pulling the heads and rubbing on the ports a bit, I can't offer much insight since you don't want to tear into the engine. (I fully understand why you don't want to get into it.)

The 429/460 comes from the factory with an dismal flowing exhaust port that backs up quickly and kills engine power. Cleaning up the ports transforms the engine a la Jeckyl and Hyde. In your case, it may help to install a freer flowing exhaast system, but this will help only so much as the exhaust ports will still be the primary restriction.
