Re: ford big block decoding

Maybe you have a 429. It is very difficult to tell the difference. Externally they look the same with only the crank and pistons different.

Re: ford big block decoding

from what I heard on the internet the whole 6015 part of the casting number was left out from the factory on some engines. I think the ones without it have bigger main bearing webs

could this be a D1VE 6015 AA

Re: ford big block decoding

There are all sorts of variances through the years with casting numbers etc. The 429 has a stroke of 3.59 and the 460 has a 3.85 stroke so if you can measure with reasonable accuracy the crank throw then you will know what you have. If you can measure from the centre line of the crank to the centre lne of the big end journal then you will know. Maybe it would be easier to pop the crank back into the block with a couple of the main caps back on and then put one of the piston assemblies back on the crank and then measure the the distance with the piston at bottom dead centre to the deck and this will tell you for sure if you have a 429 or 460.

Based on the above, it is a 1972 429. Get rid of the D2VE-AA heads and replace with something else, swap in a 460 crank and pistons (you may use the same rods) and you will have the basis for a nice engine.

Re: ford big block decoding

thanks for the info paul, i bought the engine thinking it was a 460 but thats ok lol the heads and intake are gone to the scrap yard, i was looking at making around 500 to 600hp, run on pump gas, street/strip on the weekends. I am replacing all internals new, might reuse the rods. 1st step is to get the block to the machine shop and get it dipped

Re: ford big block decoding

this is a great thread... can anyone tell me if cams, pushrods, and rocker arms are interchangeable between a 429 and 460?? I spun a rod bearing in my boat 460 and bought another 460. Turns out its a 429 not a 460. I want to use the valvetrain and cam out of my 460 cause its all good and the cam is a loper. I wont be running the 460 heads (d3ve-a2a), cause the 429 came with Dove-c heads. I just really hope all that stuff is interchangeable. Thanks
