confused 65 Mustang torque converter nightmare

Just took a job putting a 289 motor in a 65 mustang.
The customer pulled the motor and stopped.
Left the auto trans in the car.
Ok fine.

I drop the motor in no problem, but I cannot get the torque converter studs to evenly protrude through the flexplate.
At least not with the engine dangling from the hoist.
If I force the issue, the motor mounts don't reach the holes.

Ok stop laughing...

Studs on a torque converter is something I never see.
Makes the job a complete pain.

Ok, now what?
Remove trans and put the two together out of the car?
Special tool?

I am guessing pull the trans.

Re: 65 Mustang torque converter nightmare

Torque convertor drain plug needs to line up with hole in flexplate ? or spigot on convertor bent / not seating ?

Re: 65 Mustang torque converter nightmare

It turns out that the place he got the engine from left the pilot bushing in the back of the crankshaft.
Pulled it out and everything went together easily.
