Im going to look at a 69 mach 1 428 CJ "R" code and was wondering if the VIN will tell you if its a true 428 CJ "R" code . also how do you tell what size engine is supposed to be in the car.

5th digit should be "R" or "Q". R = Ram air (shaker) Q = non ram air.

The best way to tell a correct 428CJ is matching to door vin and the dash vin. Then match the vin againest the stamped vin under the front gaurds. You may have to undo the gaurd bolts and more aside, but no to many sellers will let you do this, so using a touch, read the vin under the wheel arch, but will read upside down. The front shock towers should have the Big Block reinforcing brackets, to strengthen the towers. Four speed should have staggered rear shocks. The heater motor that sticks out of the engine bay should have a special heat resistant shield.

This is not to mention the many signs for the engine itself.

Just a few pointers from "someone who has been there and done that"...lol

Can you guys help me???

I recently purchased a supposedly "original" 69 Mach 1 R code with 428 SCJ but have encountered some issues as I started the restoration process. The engine block has four mounting holes on each side (indicates a truck block?) and there is no number on the block (filed off?).

Also, the heads are stamped C6AE-A. It was supposed to have the original 427 low riser heads, but I cannot seem to find anything that confirms C6AE would be the right 427 heads for a 69 428SCJ!!!

Can anyone help?

Hi

Block: C7AE-6015-C or F or C8AE-6015_R or C8ME, Back of block (bell housing area) should have a weld mark shaped as a "C". Block has extra casting webbing next to the crank mains, thicker main bearing caps.

Heads: C8OE-6090-N (known as Nancy heads)

If your car is a SCJ (not CJ) it should have 4.11-1 (Y code) or 4.3-1 (W code) gears.

SCJ (not CJ) also have the "drag pack" option, external oil cooler, both horns monted on RH side, AC was not an option.

Many other areas to look out for, but these are the main areas to look out for.

What does the "X" in the valley mean? we were told but I am dbl checking...

We have all original Body parts for our beauty and last year came across a date correct 428 CJ block with an "X" in the valley.

To determine if you have a true Mach with 428 in it. The 5th digit should be "R" for 428 4V Cobra Jet, the "Q" is for 428 4V non Cobra Jet. The 3rd and 4th digit should be "02" for Mach1 with a body style "63C" located in the LH door tag.
