Is it ok to drop the new oil pump drive shaft into the oil pump through the distributor hole? is the retaining clip that fits on the bottom of the shaft only to keep the shaft from pulling out with the distributor and dropping into the oil pan? or does it also hold the shaft up to a proper height so when it goes into the bottom of the distrubutor it is seated far enough into the receiving hole? the stock shaft that came off the engine was not using a retaining clip.

Yes U can drop the shaft in and yes the clip is only to keep the shaft in the pump when distributor is pulled, Done it wa hundred times
