I want to change my 69 mach1 with a 351w AND c4 TO A MANUAL TRANNY. I KNOW OF A GUY WITH A T-10 GEARBOX FOR SALE, HE SAYS ITS BASICALLY BUILT THE SAME AS A TOP LOADER. CAN ANYONE TELL ME ANYTHING ABOUT THESE BOXES BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THEM.

Re: T-10 Tranny?

T-10 was a popular four speed that was designed for the 57 Corvette. It is an OK trans, kind of on the light duty side.

Had a buddy in the service with a 63 Galaxie 500XL, 406 tri power with a T10. When the tires bit the transmission would unwind, many times.

Get a top loader. You will be glad you did.

Re: T-10 Tranny?

The T-10 is a fine transmission. It was first installed in the Corvettes in the late 50's. Ford started buying them from Borg Warner in the early 60's but not before re-designing them. The Ford units are considerably stronger than the GM ones, but they all share one glaring weakness. The syncro assembly wears out rather quickly causing the trans to either grind going into gear, or slip out of gear, especially on deceleration. This situation was unacceptable to Ford so they designed their own transmission in 1964, called the "Top Loader." This transmission is one of the finest made with none of the bad traits of the T-10.
Top Loaders are available in two ratio sets, close and wide. The close ration box has a 2.36 low gear, the wide is 2.78.
Finding a good Top Loader should not present a problem.
Good Luck
Bill
