55/56 312cu/312Hp "Y" Block

Other then my 78 F150, I haven't driven a Ford since learning to drive in a 55 2Dr Custom, 3 on the tree, and believe it was about the fastest ride on the HWY back then.

I'm from Team Camaro but I've come across an extremely nice and complete MARINE 312cu/312Hp Engine. It has the Dual Single Side Draft Solex Carbs (I believe Solex) and intake with the original Chrome Valve Covers and Dual Point Mallory Mechanical Distributer. The Engine is out of an old Christ Craft Cruiser which was used in fresh water. I can't say if it has to be rebuilt but it is definitely all there and very clean looking and a beautiful engine to look at.

I've always liked the 55/56 T-Birds and could not afford to buy a Black Landau with the Port Windows and Continental Spare for $640 while delivering papers at the age of 14 ;o)

Anyway, I really hate to see this engine LOST to the Elements or Thrown Out as it would make a Beautiful Engine for any T-Bird or 50's Era Ford.

If you are interested please contact me at Tiny.Mud@gmail.com

I hope I am not infringing your Forum Rules as my intentions is not about advertising a Sale but rather preserving beautiful item of Ford History.

Thank You: Ron

Re: 55/56 312cu/312Hp "Y" Block

Thanks for moving the thread to an appropriate Section.

I’ve received a number of enquiries regarding the engine and components so I will attempt to expand. Remember I’m not that knowledge about FORD but I’ve been building Engines and Muscle for over 40 years.

If someone could tell me where to look for Casting #’s, Date Codes and Possible VIN# on the block (which I doubt would have as this is Marine Service) so I can relate them.

I am 100% sure that the engine is indeed a 312/312Hp Marine Engine as indicated by the Decals on the Valve Covers, which possibly means heavier Main Caps or 4 Bolt, and Forged Rotating Assembly. At 1 Hp/Ci I would suspect the Static compression would have to be over 9.5:1 and likely the Water Passages would be Brass lined in the Marine Intake but sure would look smart under a hood with them Side Draft Carbs.

I also suspect the Generator System is 12v Negative ground as the Distributer is a Mechanical Advance Dual Point Mallory unit, which I been informed would indicate that the Block would have to be a 56 or later.

I will attempt to post a PIC of the Engine but there is presently 3 ft of snow and its -20 here. I’m hoping that a FORD enthusiasts might want the engine sometime this spring or possibly someone wanting it for nostalgic Marine.

Re: 55/56 312cu/312Hp "Y" Block

Aren't marine engines reverse spin/turn ?

I only have info on 312 auto engines.
There were 9 of them.

Only one put to 300 HP not 312 ... that is the 1959 Engine code F

Re: 55/56 312cu/312Hp "Y" Block

Single engine Boats spin in the automotive direction and older dual engine boats probably have one reverse rotation engine but easily corrected by installing an the appropriate cam.

This is a 312 Cu/312Hp MARINE "Y" Block which I've seen put in 55 and 56 T-Birds, over the years; because, they do make power and the Side Drafts/Intake Induction looks Fantastic and very Rare to find complete.

All I can do is look for the info.

My library on Y-Blocks for cars is extensive but, probably not any for Marine application.

I found this.
