I am scratchin my head tryin to figure out the problem with this truck. The whole mess started when the engine (302 small block) backfired through the carburetor and since then it won't start. I replaced the carburetor, fuel filter, air filter, breather filter, starter solenoid, cap, and rotor. When i try to start it, it cranks and sometimes acts like it might catch and fire up but thats it. The truck was running fine before all this happened. So i need to know what you people think might have happened to it and how i should go about fixing it. Thanks.

Sounds like the ignition timing is off to me. Backfiring out the carb is usually a good indicator that you need to re-time it.

well i would try to set the timing but the truck won't start. It's real close to starting but it just doesn't seem to wanna catch on all 8 cylinders. i put in a new ignition coil and module and that helped a bit, it seems like it wants to start but i just can't get it to go. Is it possible that something is in need of adjustment on the carb?

To set the timing, you'll need to dead time it to get it close. Backfiring out the carb is nearly always due to incorrect ignition timing or improper cam timing. You need to get the number 1 cylinder at top-dead-center on the compression stroke, pull the distributor cap off and be sure the rotor is pointing towards the number 1 plug wire on the cap. That'll get you close enough to fire it up and set the timing with a timing light.

Check the points also(if you have them). Bad points will cause an intermittent spark.

dont know if you got your problem figured out or not but when did it start back firing ?
before the carb was changed or after.
are the plugs good and clean and all firing, if the carb is dumping too much fuel in the plugs could foul pretty quickly.
if the backfire was bad enough and after the carb was changed you could have blown the power valve which will let to much gas dump in as well.
i would start by checkin to see if every cyl is firing and go from there.

problem solved, now i just have to set the timing properly. it runs like a dream though. i ended up having to change the #3 spark plug because it was cracked. i had to crank it forever and ever to get it to finally start but it runs very nicely now. I think there was a bunch of shite built up on the spark plugs from being cranked but not firing but its running now. thanks for the help guys and gals if there are any out there

Check the timeing. There was a reason that it backfired in the first place. Also check the gears on the timeing they might be worn down.
