confused my mechanic died

I have a 1952 ford panel truck with a 213. Blew the engine and a mechanic was putting in a 223 straight six. He died half way throught the project. I got it running but in front of the block there is a hole on the right side where water came shooting out. The hole is the size of a pencil, goes in about 1 inch with no threats. Thought it might be a freeze plug but can not find a size to fit it. Though I had the wrong water pump but the pumps on the 213 and 223 appear to be the same. Any thoughts?
