Getting what I need for exterior painting

This is post #3 for the same car today, but I'm making a list of things to do.. I bought a 1993 ford escort lx 1.9l, and at some point in the near future I'd like to tackle repainting the exterior. The current paint is oxidized and faded; though by luck, it has no rust on it. I currently have no experience or tools for exterior painting. As I said before, its no problem if I mess something up and have to start over, I do not drive this car to work and back. Basically I'd like to know what all the tools are I'd need to do a good multi-coat paint job (I don't want to do the single coat spray, I want to do the base, color, gloss spray). Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Re: Getting what I need for exterior painting

In order to get it ready for paint basically a sander(d/a) is needed and sandpaper.

You will need to remove the damaged paint (oxidized) by sanding it, I would recommend 220 grit and then 320 grit. If you plan on priming it then skip the 320 part and prime it. Then sand with 320 or 400 and spray it.

If you have any damage or dents fix them before you prime.

Along with sand paper I recommend you get some scuff pads. Red ones for before primer and grey for after. You dont need these but they do make it easier on the edges and hard to reach with sandpaper areas.

A good spray gun is not essential, some of the cheaper ones do fine.

After the paint is cured you will most likely have some areas that will need a little attention, like dirt, dry spray or runs.

Then you will need some finer paper to sand this down. Like 800-2000 grit.

Start with 1000 on the rougher areas and end using 2000. Then buff to a shine.

Good luck.
