Paint and Panel Free Advice

Advice is like opinions and arseholes every one has one. Looking thru the forum i have noticed that a lot of users are doing up cars so whats this got to do with the price of duckshit?
Ive been painting for 20 years everything from Rolls Royce to Hot Rods race cars and just about every harley you can think of. My point is it costs a lot of money to paint a car nowdays and unfortunately there are a lot of wankers in the industry who either promise a lot and dont deliver or just seperate gullible people from their hard earned $$$$. So seeing as i own fords can paint and beat the bastards i thought id make my experience available to all for free. So if u have any questions or want to know processes involved in repainting and body repairs or want some information before u approach a panel shop let me know remember forewarned is forearmed. It also helps put something back into a hobby/passion when i have had older people advise me on stuff, its paying a debt of sorts. So feel free no matter how silly it seems.

Well said PUP!!

I had a bad experience with getting someone to do some body work on my EA a few years ago, so I decided to redo the whole car myself.

It took me 3 months to finish the car (took it to bare metal) but it was well worth it. I personally will never take my car to any panel shop, especially with the continious ammount rush jobs I see.

Its a shame that the dodgy guys stuff it up for the rest of the industry.

Just my 2c

Me wants advice too.

What kind of prepping and painting method would you use to paint bumpers and door mouldings?

ea90_s you can fix sills and arches a few different ways, bare metal the area and around 2inches past the rust, clean the bare metal with some prepsol, treat the rust with exit rust or stop rust let it dry for 24 hours. you can either weld in a patch on the sills or the arches, or the most common fix is to use fiberglass filler sand it back then finish off with a good quality bog such as k&h toucan. Make sure that you treat the rust whichever way you go or it will just reappear. the problem with priming straight over glass filler is that it acts like a sponge and sucks paint into it, so i stress finish it off with a good plastic filler. As for paint code there is a post somewhere in the forum regarding paint codes , or call ppg or standox give them the code to get the colour go to your local auto one and buy it in a pressure pack once you have the name. Word of warning there is variation in colour with paint ie standox dynamic white is slightly bluer and cleaner than ppg's, it can also be that the colour is different from the ford factory. I have seen a factory painted car that has 3 different shades of the same colour on the body. there is generally a place in each state that will match the colour and put it in a pressure pack if requested. With sill repairs sometimes its easier to replace the sills but you need to be able to use a mig or have a mate that can. Rare spares ans triple sss have repair panels. if you go this way use an angle grinder to cut off old sill get the new one first b4 you cut take note of the new sill sizes remove old one then hold new one in place spot weld it to fix it, then go round it spotting it where there are small circle shaped depressions. use some bog on the edges and a good seam sealer. Good luck mate.

hey, i have a few little dints in my drivers door and just behind the front indicator also on the drivers side.

Would these be possible to just press out from the inside myself or something?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Dane.

hey pup,

i just got a white 88 EA-s a few weeks ago and the paint has chips all over it and it has a few rust spots aswell as cracked paint in a few places.

i want to get the car resprayed, my dad is mates with a panel beater and will do it for a good price. Giving that there is cracks in the paint and alot of chips, do you recomend that i strip it back to metal or could i just rub it back a bit and respray it?

btw i am more than likeley goin to keep that car white but put a pearl over it.

ps how do they put a pearl on a car? what is the process?

thanks,

Nathan

I was thinkn to get the esky baremeteled and get someone to weld up patch panels. and respray the car myself shouldnt be that hard. might wait till i get my own escort then go crazy on it.
btw a mate told me when u baremetle the car u cant just spray primer over the metel but u need to spray some kind of paint then primer what could that be.
