Painting Black

How the hell do u get black paint to look nice? Give me any other colour and I can do it really good but black always turns out shit. I did the mirrors exactly the same way as I do other stuff, lightly sand it with 400 then 800, then paint it, sand it again, then do another coat, and if it looks and feels like it needs another sand I do it then give it a few light coats of paint then a couple of clear on top. But black always turns out looking and feeling like shit. Could it be the brand of paint? I've been using Holts alot and the black I've got is K+H. What am I doing wrong? any other tips to do a good job?

Black can be difficult to get right...

All I can offer is I resprayed my mirror covers on my NA Fairlane. I had 10% gloss black mixed by my auto paint supplier as it looks more factory in appearance.

Spray cans are the worst way to spray anything really. I own a compressor and spray gear and do all my own panel and spray work.

As long you are applying light even coats and the surface has been cleaned with wax & grease remover & you have used a plastic primer (although plastic primer is'nt necessary normal acrylic primer will do).

Also don't spray them when its cool or late in the arvo as the paint wiil bloom (it will take on a faded appearance), spray them in a warm environment, dusting the coats on lightly, allow about 20mins between coats & when the paint has hardened up usually 24hrs, give them a light sand with 1200 grit wet n dry then a light polish with a good cutting compound. I would recomend "T Cut" thats the best for fresh paint. Should come up great dude...

Good luck mate

Long live the EA!

back in black, paint it black baby.

As any paint guru knowns there is no such thing as a 'perfect black' or perfect white' as they are primary colours with differentiation. With a black duco it is (when looked at with a keen eye) bound to look reddish or purply in colour. When we were about to paint the EA GTHO we seriously thought about a 'pearl black' used in the EB GT duco. Though we changed our mind when we saw we could get a Porsche genuine 'midnight blue'. Looks nearly like black, costs a packet. It looks nearlly like black in most light conditions. The EB Pearl Duco was slightly cheaper. Though this paint looks a million bucks. Though JOhnno is worried shitless about parking the car without someone scratching the bloody thing when no-one is looking. Thats the price you have to pay I spose.......

Auto store fellows (supercheap, auto-one, wolfys etc) should be able to help you with your painting needs just fine..... Or go to Ford and see if they will help you....
50/50 chance, depending on whom is at the counter I spose......

Re: paint it black

I realise using cans to paint with isnt as good as using proper spray equipment but at the moment its just too expensive to get into and getting it isnt really justifiable as I'm only doing lil things. It didnt turn out so bad tho, it looked shit cos I thought all the lint and stuff flying around in the shed had stuck to it but it didnt thankfully. But it is rough as shit, I think it must be the brand of paint cos I painted the thing under the windscreen with Holts paint and it turned out pretty smooth.
