Hey Guys,

The back covers on the side mirrors on my XF were colour coded from the factory..but the paint has now become very brittle and has a lot of chips all over it...and after a run in with a truck...one mirror has a large scratch on it now :-(

I am going to repaint the covers myself...but what should i use to remove the old paint?? Can i just use paint stripper?? Will that damage the plastic??

When i repaint do i need to use a plastic primer?? I was thinking of just painting them using one of those touch up cans ( a few coats) and then 3 or so coats of clear coat on top...

Is that the best way of doing it??

Not sure on the stripping, I would probably use sandpaper, finishing with 1200 grit emery.
Definatly use plastic primer (I use 2 coats) or the paint will flake right off. Then 2 or 3 of paint then your clear. I want to do mine too, so thats how I will do it.

plastic primer come in a can? where can you get it from?

i went to super cheap and got the stuff today. Overdose the primer comes in a spray can so does the clear coat.

Motospray Adhesion Promotor (Plastic Primer) $11
Motospray Acrylic Clear Coat $11
Power Plus Touch Up Paint $7
SandPaper $1

Not bad pricing!

By the way..paint stripper will ruin the plastic..according to the can it said not to use on plastics/rubbers/vinyls..so use sandpaper as XESpakman suggested..

id use some red scotch bright to get rid of the shiny-ness, then fill in any scratches with fine filler, sand it out with 150 and plastic prime, then paint

but its up to you, it would turn out the same either way you done it

when you paint anything make sure you have no flaking paint at all ,you do not need to take off all the paint,unless you want to .where there are chips in the paint you need to make these areas smooth so you cant see any edges of paint any areas where there are still paint go over with a bout a 300 grit paper and then in diferent sizes till 1200 grit and you have a smooth even surface,use filler if you have to .thenprime with plastic primer,1-2 coats , paint like 2-3 coats of color rubbing back with a very fine sand paper between coats .then say arround two coats of clear .but leave the clear for around a week before you apply .

after you have the clear on use some stuff called farecla and you will have a high gloss surface or shinny surface

I use brake fluid on scale model plastic with no harm couldn't imangine the brake fluid hurting the mirror plastiv if it's an abs type.
