Q: Spraying metallic paint - Ford Forums

Hi everyone,

My bro is respraying his XB in its original metallic green. He wants to know:

Do you rub back each colour coat and each clear coat, or do you just rub back each clear coat?

Anyone done a metallic respray at home? What did you do and how did it turn out? Learn anything? Any tips welcome.

I work in a panel shop but mainly use 2-pak paints, I presume that your using acrylic paint, when you spray the colour on dont put it on to heavy, just light coats and wait about 5-10 miutes between coats im not sure how many coats your supposed put on when using acrylic but I'd probably put a minimum of 5 once you have finshed putting on the colour if there is any bits of dust or crap on the paint I'd give ligt rub now put your clear on, put it on a bit heavier but still only lightly and the more coats the more depth you will get, when finished give it a rub and buff it all up

cogo are you saying that you dont need to rub back the last coat of colour if there isnt any bits of dust and crap on it? Will the clear bond okay with the colour if you dont give the colour a rub back?

I'm pretty sure that you dont have to rub the colour before you put the clear on as long as you dont leave it long before you put clear on. Metallic paints are pourus and the clear will seap into the colour. You probably will get shit in the paint because you are not spraying in a booth and if your bro is not an expert spraypainter you probably should give it a light rub before you put the clear on it will give it a flatter finish

#Try wetting down the concrete just before you spray,this will help stop any shit getting in the paint.
*Make sure everything on, near or around the car IS dust free & clean. prep everything & be set up ready to go 1st thing, less wind around (just make sure its gunna be a nice day.
%Mix all your paint in 1 go (rather than bit by bit) for better colour consistancy and Continually stir the paint to keep the metallic mixed thru evenly.
@I never rub my colour coats back unless there was a run or shit in it, rub back lightly wet, then a little more paint to cover the scratches(very small but will show up)
^finish colour with a light misty coat for the matallic
After the colour, mix 75% colour to 25% clear - a light misty coat
then 50/50 colour / clear, then25% / 75% clear
then I would say about 7 -8 light coats of clear. (the extra coats give a little room for heavy handed rubbing back which you dont want but is easy to do as well as a few coats being rubbed off and leaving plenty on there.Make sure you cover the edges well
!Give it a week or 2 to let the paint harden a little & rub back with 2000 grade wet & dry with soapy water, enough to take the orange peel out which is even evident in factory paint. let set for about a month for chemicals to evaporate out of paint, then polish (buff) & wax (good quality) Comes up like glass and will give a mirror like reflection. Done my XY ute and had experianced painters try to tell me it was painted in 2 pak. HaHaHa
!Take your time preping the body properly as it wont matter how good your paint is on a shit body,dont rush as temting as it may be & take the time to tape up properly.

Factory paint has got orange peel because it is painted in 2-pak and if you even look at the critera for summernats they allow for orange peel on cars painted in 2-pak.
I just resprayed my car about 3 months ago in stadox exclusive line paints which changes from green, blue, purple, black, red, gold and a couple of other shades hope I can get some pics soon.

Yeah, thanks Geoff - my bro will do a much better job on the XB now. I just hope he has the patience! He's lucky he's got other cars to drive around while he's doing it, so he can afford to spend more time on it. Only problem is it's in Dad's shed taking up room.
