XW vs XY Guards

Hey guys

Just bought an XW ute, and want XY front.
Are the XW front guards EXACTLY the same as XY...to me they seem so.

Is anyone 100% sure?

Cheers

Re: XW vs XY Guards

Very close, but from memory, there is a slight difference in the relief holes for clearance of the bulb holders in the indicator units. This can be fixed with a little creative filing (found out when I replaced an XY guard with an XW one on a car I stacked!). so yep, they can be used!

Re: XW vs XY Guards

Early XW Guards require way to much butchering in the Headlight mounting area to fit an XY Grille and Indicators.Late XW Guards are suited to this conversion.I will check some Guards Tomorrow and see if I have any for some comparisson Pic's.

Re: XW vs XY Guards

Here are some Pic's for you to show how differant XW and XY Guards are...The Red Guards below are early XW These White Guards below are XY and I believe that late XW also had them. Besides the whole Headlight Bucket area being completely differant,I have also circled in Green another area of differance... I have found that you have to cut to much off the XW Guard for this conversion and you lose far to much metal, making this area to flimsy. So to do it properly you'll have to either get XY Guards or unpick the XW front pieces and weld in XY ones.Alternatively...if you do cut up and modify the existing XW Bucket areas, then you should weld some reinforcement onto them...Goodluck !!!

Re: XW vs XY Guards

Well ya learn something new every day! I must have sourced a late model XW guard all those years ago, as I distinctly remember elongating the upper hole into an oval shape like on the XY guards. From memory, apart from that, the fit was ok.

Hmmm...very interesting, will have to look into getting new guards then, as I cant be bothered muck-assn round with all that.

Looks like you have a few spare cars in the background of those pix. Any 'good' XY guards, grill and spotties?? Hehehe

Re: XW vs XY Guards

The XW's are both to be restored as soon as the new shed goes up.The white XY Guard is the only one I have.It is very straight, but is rusty at the bottom and some surface rust.I have another excellent bottom section for it that I cut off a smashed Guard that I would consider selling. These Guards are getting harder to find now and are very expensive if in very good shape.I have an XY Grille and a pair of Parkers that I may also sell. The Grille has had the chrome strips rivetted on,but they seemed to have used the existing holes and the passenger side Insert has a chip off one of the top lugs, which I have circled in green. The frame also needs some repair on the passenger side bottom that I've highlighted also. There is a pair of Parklight Assemblies plus a spare one.The lenses are'nt Roadworthy, but the Housings are in fairly good condition. There are also some Pic's below of these parts that I have mentioned and I have also include some of the XY RH bottom repair section.I would sell the XY Grille as pictured with the three Parker Assemblies, the RH XY Guard and rust repair section for $175.00 for the lot.
