2.5in Cat back Exhaust (8-10rwkw gain for EF-EL 6cyl)

Hi Guys

I was just reading an autospeed article about Jim Mock and he claims that a madrel bent cat back exhaust generally gains 8-10rwkw on an EF-El 6cyl Falcon.

Has anyone's 6cyl EF-El got this sort of power increase after having a cat back sports exhaust fitted.

He also reckon's this is the first mod you should do and you don't need to modify your intake unless the car pulls more than 140rwkw.

He also said that the EF dual intake pipes work better than the EL and AU single bore pipe.

Another thing he said that a pod filter inside the airbox works alot better than an after market drop-in panel filter.

Anyone agree/disagree with these comments?

Cheers Luke.

Re: 2.5in Cat back Exhaust (8-10rwkw gain for EF-EL 6cyl)

Actually i had a look at the JMM site as well and its got me scratching my head about the power there claiming you can get from a 2 and a half mandrel bent exhaust system??? Well as im going to re do my exhaust system looks like ill be asking if mandrel bent systems are any good? Regarding exhausts they mention that the inline 6's are restrictive when it comes to muffler selections so thats another role they play in i guess.

Just a question without me making another thread and hopefully im not hi jacking this thread as its on the same wavelength regarding to jmm kits they offer....for a DEV1 kit they say get exhaust, headers, i think CAI and spark plugs. Now what kinda spark plugs are these that there talking about?

JMM told me that they import their plugs directly from the USA. Regarding CAT back exhaust IMO its better to go the whole hog and get the headers at the same time. Reason it will give more power, maximise the effect of the mandrel bent exhaust and will sound twice as good.

Re: 2.5in Cat back Exhaust (8-10rwkw gain for EF-EL 6cyl)

ED I6 how good are these spark plugs? At the moment ive got the pacemakers and exhaust but i havent changed my cat so now im gonna go for the hi flow cat and re do my exhaust. i guess you either do it properly or not at all. Ive heard people saying that the original cats on ford and holdens do the job just like a hi flow but will see what happens.

Re: 2.5in Cat back Exhaust (8-10rwkw gain for EF-EL 6cyl)

I did a search and it seems other people have said the JMM plugs are Autolite 985. In terms of if they are better than other plugs I don't know (Came with the rebuild), I guess if someone else has used these plugs versus other plugs they may be able to help.
As a word of warning, when I originally got a hi-flow cat it was stuffed in under 2 years. Some performance shops say the ford cats flow just as good if not better than most hi flows anyway.

yep, go the pod...with cold air induction... definatly do the extractors and 2.5 inch exhaust at the same time to maximise performance... its what i did to my ef fairmont 6 first up 2 years ago...

Re: 2.5in Cat back Exhaust (8-10rwkw gain for EF-EL 6cyl)

Thanks for the info ED I6 much appreciated. Im so confused with these setups when it comes to ''cold air induction'' pod vs panel. By the way if anybody knows who have done an EFFECTIVE cai and improves fuel economy if somehow i could get in contact with somebody that would be great.

JJJ just knowing from experience what other people have done to there I6 when it comes to exhaust they would go for 2 and half system not really familiar with mandrel bent usually with one muffler and a resonator or hotdog lol not sure which ones the right one. Makes them descently loud enough.

Extractors normally pacemakers are the favourite but check out other brands. extractors more for top end, You do feel the extra pull not alot on the bottom end and makes your car louder.

Hi flow cat thats a toss up, theres a couple of ways of looking at it. They say hi flow cats are good when your car is pumping descent amount of power thats when there effective, ford and holden cats are just as good as the hi flow cat or lastly just changing it so you have a brand new exhaust system all the way thru.

When it comes to filters i found the panel filters pretty good on the 6cyl's. I think pods are for more 4cyl cars but i could be wrong. K & N panel does the job just stick one on there get someone to rev the car and feel the air getting sucked into the snorkel.

This is all just from personal experience, word of mouth or just ford forums.

Re: 2.5in Cat back Exhaust (8-10rwkw gain for EF-EL 6cyl)

i havent heard anyone gaining much with a panel filter on the e-series but an enclosed POD filter with large cold air intake does and will gain a worthwhile result.

also good extractors will make a big difference to low-mid range power as well, jmm race and pacemaker race ones i think gain all over the rev range.

about the 2.5" cat back systems, i am just about to put one on my EB2. I got the intermediate bit with muffler - mandrel bent 2.5" with straight thru mercury muffler. the rear part will be 2.5" pressbent compared to mandrel bent there wont be a noticable difference IMO.

ill report on how it goes.

Re: 2.5in Cat back Exhaust (8-10rwkw gain for EF-EL 6cyl)

I have an EF Falcon and the first mod I got was a cat back 2.5 inch sports exhaust, and to be honest I dont think I gained 8-10rwkw. At the most I think I gained 3-4rwkw, nothing major at all.

But thats not to say you can't get that little bit extra out of your car.

Re: 2.5in Cat back Exhaust (8-10rwkw gain for EF-EL 6cyl)

I dont know how effective pods are when there enclosed in there box but i have experimented with a pod, i removed the whole box and fitted the pod now i had no heat shield around it just the pod on its own. It isnt a proper setup but just to see the difference between the two was the pod made a deep noise but i had lag. Wasnt really happy with it. At time of use temp was about in the early 20's.

Im using the panel now im happy with it but keen on ways on improving air flow.
