diff gears

i no we have heard this b4 but would any1 know how to work out how many revs i would be doing at 100km with a 3.73's Diff 4 speed auto, 0.68 4th gear ratio (in overdrive of course)

ive just got a 2500 stally last week, but the car is still running the SHOCKING 2.77LSD SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWw diff and im sick of it, love the highway economy though lol 6-7L per100 110km doing 1700rpm lol

noooooo not THAT high!

EB, are you sure your car has a 2.77? It should surely have a 3.08 or 3.23/3.27 diff in it. 2.77s were last seen in 3 speed EAs. Your RPMs at 100kph sound about right for a 2.77, which suggests this ratio has been retrofitted at some point in time.

2.77s were either open wheeler OR LSD. I think pretty much all the diff ratios could be optioned as LSD or not.

3.73 should give 2281rpm at 110kph for you.

Equation = 1700 (at 110) / 2.77 = 613.7184 (dividing rpms by old diff ratio)
(multiplying this by new diff ratio) 613.7184 * 3.73 = 2281rpm

Keep in mind you might not be able to fit 3.73 gears into a 2.77 diff's housing. Do some research before committing to gears.

Also, you'll need to correct your speedo. DO NOT replace the calibration gear, as this will stuff up your auto's shift points, etc. There's a circuit available thru Jaycar that fixes the speedo error without stuffing up your auto's behaviour, but I don't have the link on me at the moment sorry.

So a search in the archives of the www. fordforums .com .au forum, there should be some info there.

Cheers

-Dave-

Re: diff gears

Thanks for the help yeah, the 2.77 was fitted on the cheap coz my old 3.23 was clunking like ya wouldnt belive but 2300 around that rev is nice shouldnt chew the juice thats all i was worried about, freeway economy, i was gonna get a 3.45 speedo drive gear for it, which would bring it fairly close...

funny even with this diff the 2500 stally has me flogging commodores again and i kept even with a BA XT i raced today till about 70 and he started getting an edge but yeah 2.77 is baddddddd on a 4 speed lol

About fitting 3.73;s on this diff, im not lol, im going to falcom next week and buying an original 3.23 again and taking that to diff lappers to have the gears fitted then gonna fit the rear axle myself...

should be fine shouldnt it?

(oh the 2.77 is lsd, i sorta know that because when i jacked the back end up both wheels turned the same way when i rotated them... and its spins both )

I figured that 2.77s would be LSD on the 3 speed EA Ghias, but you could be right mate

EB - do you mean purchasing a 3.23 diff (inc. axles), having the gears swapped for 3.73s, then installing the diff yourself in your own time? 3.73s should fit fine in a 3.23 housing.

I'm looking forward to having 4.11s fitted next monday! I've got an 8 so it revs a little lower than the 6, I should expect 2262rpm@100kph now, and 2514rpm@110kph :D

It'll be a while before I sort out my speedo though. And my BA shifter has been giving me troubles lately (Ford Quality <tm>!) so no semi-manual fun for a while, just hooning around in D :(

Good luck with the diff swap mate

Re: diff gears

Ahh ok, good luck with the swap mate!

I went with 4.11s coz a mate bought a diff with 4.11s in it and wanted everything out of that diff (its LSD, disc rear, leaf sprung, from an XH ute) for his XC sedan. The 4.11s aren't pintara gears either, they're good stuff! *Free* hehehe

4.11s will reduce my max 1st gear speed of 110kph (!!!) to 85kph, which is a considerable change. She revs at 6000 at 110 lol

3.73s are probably the best all-rounders, they give good acceleration and good cruising RPM.

Cheers mate

-Dave-

PS I'll have to find that damn Jaycar circuit sometime soon, or simply get used to 126kph being 100, and 138kph being 110

you need a 2.92 or 3.23 or 3.27 etc carrier to mount 3.7 gears.
the 2.77 was the only gear to have its own carrier.

Re: diff gears

http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productVie...Max=&SUBCATID=

Link to speedo calibration kit from Jaycar. I haven't gotten around to ordering one yet (having a credit card would help!) but I'll need it, as my speedo now reads 138kph at 110kph

Other than that, 4.11s rock, and the diff is so tight she chatters in carparks! w00t

I got charged $330 for having the gears from a 3.27 LSD diff (mine) and a 4.11 LSD diff (mate's) swapped. I thought I'd pay for my mate's half, since he bought that diff for his car, & it cost him a fair bit coz it's brand new (only did one 1/4 mile pass). They're proper 4.11s too, not Pintara gears :D
