e-series computers/chips

Was wondering what type of computer the e-series (particulary the EF) cars run off
Things like how it was made?
is info burnt on?
Who by?
What on?
What programmes? etc.
I cant remember what i was actually ment to ask, so if u think of anything else, let us know.
I know an electronic engineer who thinks it mightnt be to hard to fiddle round with em once he knowns who/what/why/when.
Thought it might be worth having a play :) if its not worth it, no biggie
