EA 4spd auto reverse problem

My EA II with 4spd auto has decided it wont go in reverse until I get the engine doing bulk revs, and then it shudders and jolts it's way back slowly. It seems to like being moving already for the gearbox to do any work. It goes forwards fine. I checked transmission fluid with engine warm and in P, it's right on the full mark. It also has been thumping into 2nd and 4th for years, but this problem has happened all of a sudden, I was driving it in reverse fine, then no more than 3 minutes later it wouldn't reverse. Does anyone know what could cause this, and how much $$ would I be possibly be needing to fix it?

Now it doesn't go backwards at all. How much $$ can you make if you strip an EA and sell it piece by piece?

I think there's your answer as to why it won't go into reverse...

Re: EA 4spd auto reverse problem

I had it checked out and it appears the reverse 'clutch pack' doesn't work... $1800 to fix, $2500 to rebuild entire gearbox. $0 to roll it off a cliff.

Re: EA 4spd auto reverse problem

Might be a bit more than $50 ay? I'm considering options now, should I get a replacement auto or do a manual conversion?

Re: EA 4spd auto reverse problem

replacement autos can be VERY cheap (ebay is your friend). But, why not go for a manual conversion

You'd probably be better off buying a complete shitter manual EA for a couple of hundred, transferring all the manual bits across, and parting out the rest of the shitter EA (back on ebay?).
