Hi,

I have a 1990 EA 3.9L MPI that is almost dead, I'm looking to replace it with an ED, EL or AU engine but am unsure which one to go with.

I've been told there's no real difference between these engines except their age... is this true?

Is it better/easier to stay with an E series engine or move to AU?

It all comes down to the money you have to spend.

Ideally a BA motor would be best, followed by AU then EL.
I'd locate a EL XR motor for it and drop it staight in. Although the inlet manifolds do differ.
Cheapest is a low klm ED XR6 motor.

i've been quoted $1500 EL & $1900 AU fitted...

is it only the EL XR manifolds that differ or the std EL too? the wrecker has EL's still running, so could they just drop everything from it into my EA?

trouble is, i'd have to find an ED XR6 in the paper then find a mechanic to fit it for me and there's no garauntee the engines good.. least with the wrecker i can see the car running and get a 6month/10000Km warranty
