Gday all tim here , i have an ea fairmont and i have this wierd hum or light vibration in it ,it sounds like it is coming from the front of the car but not sure ,I have replaced all bearing in drive line and wheels and also tyres but it is still there nothing running wise has been affected as it has been there over a year now and still nothing has changed or been affected by it .Does anyone have any idea or have they experienced this themselves i would love to get rid of this annoying noise as it is a good car this car has been seen to by tyre and wheel companys ,transmission experts and also general mechanics ,none of them have a clue other than booking it in and finding the noise ( how long or how much would this cost ? your guess was as good as theirs $$$$$$$ ) if anybody has a clue please get back to me cheers .

to all that replied i will explain more - 35 km,s or upward till slow down to stop hum or vibe comes in i have changed fan , and it will happen when car rolling down hill not in drive and also engine not running sound like wheels huh? but has all been replaced where to go now ??????

Checked the cooling fan for cracks (you will usually need to remove the fan to see any cracks around the hub)? Does it do it a certain revs or at particular road speeds.

I was also thinking Fan.
but would need to hear it. AT LEAST i have confirmed good componants that I won't sell as test units!... Ed-ED and mustangs are my game :)

Start by....with car switched off, grabbing the fan and seeing if it has any side movement. Also do the same for any idler pulleys fitted..it may be one of them.

But going back to tyres....when you replaced them did you try a different brand/model??? sometimes a tyre type does hum!.

Here's a long shot for you. You say the car is an EA Fairmont. Is it a factory 4 speed auto? 'cause if it is, then I am guessing you need a new diff......

If it is a 4 speed, then the source of the noise is pretty "technical", and most people won't pick it up.

the trans is a three speed and the sound will be there even if motor not running and car is in motion could be the trans but trans specialist drove it and said no it wasnt

Certainly a challenging problem so I guess we need to try some long shots. Does it have a front external sunshade fitted? If so check for cracks. Also try spraying the drive shaft splines where it enters the transmission with CRC or WD40; dust or dirt in these splines can cause a wining sound. Were the knuckle spindles OK when you replaced the bearings? I assume the front brake pads are Ok. Can you duplicate the noise if you jack up the front wheels and spin them by hand?
