I just bought an immaculate eb fairmont 3.9i, im just interested to know where the 4.0 gets the extra 10kw from?? I know the 4.0 has a lower comp head...

4.0 has a bigger bore
91.86mm for the 3.9 and the 4.0 92.3mm
or 3949cc 3.9 3984 cc 4.0

so the 4.0 doesnt have a high tuned chip or better cam??

There are many differences. The EA head has a big ridge between the exhaust valves, different pistons (maybe rods as well, not sure though). I seem to remember that the EA cams had more lift than later models, but I guess others have more duration and/or steeper ramp angles. A lot probably comes down to refinement and tuning.
