ECU + Fuel pump relay troubles

My car (EA cpi 4spd auto) stalled yesterday(it was like somebody had turned the ignition key off) doing 60kmhr and had to call RACQ as i couldn't get it started. The engine would crank but it just wouldn't kick. I then couldn't smell any fuel so i turned the key on/off about 7times to prime the fuelpump and the car then started just as the racq bloke pulled up. He said it could be a number of things but he said it would be electrical.. I asked him about ignition coil etc but he reckons when they stop they stop. Ive just replaced leads, plugs, dizzy cap , rotor , fuel filter, air filter about 1 month ago. He told me to tap the 2 relays under the battery and as i tapped the ECU relay with a screwdriver the motor stalled. The fuel pump relay was tapped a number of times but nothing happened. I opened the top of the ecu relay and i could see the contact being made, so is it possible that the coil on the relay is losing it's magnetism to hold the contact or is this relay just be sensitive to shock, any ideas on how much are they, any one had a problem like this??? This is the 3rd time it has happened and the other day i had trouble starting it????

My Advice: Check your fuel level!!

The EA's are getting old now, and the fuel sensor connectors in the boots are starting to corrode. The one on mine started showing the wrong fuel amount(always shows more fuel then you actually have) and ended up with me being stuck out 100km from anywhere. 3/4ths showing on the guage but nothing in the tank... not happy jan.

My parents one has just recently gone in their EA wagon as well, luckily i could identify the problem straight away so they didn't have to take it to a mechanic.

2 out of 2 EA's is not good... I wonder how many other people in this forum has had this problem.

Cheers

Hey donuts, i had this problem on my car just after i changed the fuel pump over to mpi version. Tank reading was 1/4 but was empty. I just filled her up and she began working again. Must have had the float stuck and filling the tank musta free'd it up :)

Yep those relays are $11.00 at auto one. The coolant gets into them...They don't have to be old either..Check all earths and electrical connections...

biggrin

Problem solved with intimitent fuel cut out, I removed the cover over the fuel pump in the boot and what do you know it was caked to the top with gravel and dirt. The 12v connector and fuel sender were both totally packed full of dirt thus making poor connections, hence fuel supply problems and the incorrect fuel level on the gauge. Cleaned out with vacume cleaner and sprayed with crc. The car seems to have a lot better throttle response now and the fuel gauge is now showing the right level and flicks up to that level twice as quick as before. I am happy as this problem has frustrated me for over 1 year now???
