Having trouble getting my car to fire up,it wants to start but has a fuel smell under the bonnet the more i try the battery goes flat.Took it to a mechanic he replaced plugs, leads, distributor and coolant temp sensor took it home that night but next morning would not start.$400 bucks later, now he says he`s not sure wot the problem is?
Went outside and started the ED the other day first go,so i took it for a spin thought the starting problem had fixed itself, until the next day,i tried to start it again and it would not start,so i left it for about week tried to start it again and it started.

Hi jay, let me give you my 2 cents
You don't mention if the coil has been replaced or if your car runs normally after you get it started. The coils used on 3.9-4.0L engines crack due to heat and leak out current intermittently onto the block. Most of the times, when you test for spark at the leads it will be there but it will be weak and kind of blueish. This is not strong enough to work inside the combustion chamber, you need to verify a strong white spark capable of jumping a big gap or remove the coil from the car AND remove the brackets that hold the coil, then look for cracks.

my 2 cents also, I had heaps of problems like that with a dirty throttle position sensor connector. Worked like a charm after I cleaned it with contact cleaner. Then I cleaned all the sensors just for good luck.
EDIT: come to think of it I had idling problems... not starting. It would idle all high, then other times stall. Sorry maybe this isn't that relevant to your problem
