ED Fairmont Test drive! Dickey gauge or worse.

As the title implies, I've found an ED Fairmont for sale 180,000kms in awesome condition in and out. The guy wants $4650 for it.

During the test drive everything was working great except the temperature dial, cos it didn’t work, the needle just sat in the off position and very randomly would jump into the red and would flicker like that very randomly!

What do u guys think? Is it just the temp gauge? Or something bigger! My dad was saying something about a seal that courses the motor to over heat very quickly if it goes. Any input will be very great thanks!

could just be a dodgy gauge/connection. If it was running at that temp it would seem really sluggish or slow, was it like that?

After thinking back a little more, The car did feel very slugish and woundnt drop bad down the gears much. It also had a hot smell to it after i had finished driving it, which was for only 10 mins. Why would the car be making so much HEAT! Wot are the possible courses? and what how much would the possible courses costy to fix? PLEASE HELP

Hard to say without actually seeing the car.

However, Flicking the power switch on the console will give you better kick-down response.

i'd be pretty sure its the gauge if it was the motor you'd know
check the oil,coolants,etc did you?

if it was as hot as you said was there any overflow happening etc?

Re: ED Fairmont Test drive! Dickey gauge or worse.

Regards the hot smell- maybe the owner had recently degreased it. When I first bought my EA it'd just been degreased and it had that hot smell about it. Went away gradually. Might be gunk and oil heating up too. What ended up happening with the sale?
