My EF falcon has been having dramas with the crank angle sensor for a while I have replaced it twice but am still having problems.
the other night it got a little warm & then all of a sudden there were no gears
at all but as soon as we poured water over the crank angle sensor the gears were back working again fine.
it lasted about an hour of constant driving before again the gears disappeared & we poured water over it again & then again the gears were working again.
Can anyone please tell me what is the cause of this problem please??

I'm not exactly sure what your problem is, but I can guarantee you it's not a Crank Angle sensor fault. The strategy programmed into EF/EL prevents the car from starting or running when the sensor signal is missing or corrupted, as the PCM doesn't know where top dead centre is. So you don't have neither spark nor injector pulse.
There must be something else you're spraying with water that's making things go back to normal. The only sensor I know of that has a similar effect to what you describe is the Inhibitor switch on the side of the box, but from your description I will put my money on a poor ground or signal wire from gearbox to PCM. Remember that water is a good conductor and I'd say that you're probably creating a better contact when you spray it. cheers

My EF 6 cyl. Auto may be having a similar problem.

Symptoms
The engine appears to miss, and is gutless when under load, or even up a small incline. Diagnostics says, cam angle sensor and cylinders not firing. This appears to play havoc when on cruise control. I think cruise control is getting confused by lack of engine power, and is kicking down gears much further than it should - 2nd gear at highway speeds!

I recently had my gearbox rebuilt, so at first I thought this was the problem, but I'm starting to have 2nd thoughts. Why on earth would a faulty cam angle sensor play up under load?

Yes typical of a Camshaft position sensor failure (as distinct from cam angle sensor) - the thing that sits where the distributor is in other models. Veale and other sell rebuilt units. Eg see: Inject-a-Carb

The are reparable if you use a solvent to dissolve the stuff the circuit is encased in and you know how to repair electronics. Been there done that; easier to pay the $100 and get a replacement.

Lukichic: have you an aftermarket immobiliser that is perhaps installed in the trans inhibitor switch circuit?

I'll have a closer look at my engine tomorrow. There's a good bet I'll replace that sensor (and 'yes' I probably got my sensor names mixed up). Thanks for the link too.

Just a quick followup. I just replaced the Cam Angle Sensor (pictured above) and my spark plugs which fixed my problems (Code 214 Cam Angle Sensor fault). The car drives like normal again. Thanks Aussieblue.
