EL auto hard shifting probs

I have a 97 EL wagon and before it gets to operating temperature (approx 15 minutes) the auto shifts nicely.
When the engine is at operating temperature the auto shifts very hard into
2nd and 3rd.
I've been told that there are electric solenoids in the trans for each shift that become faulty and need replacing and that they cost $200 each.
Is that true? Anyone else had this problem?

It also shifts hard into overdrive if allowed to shift at less than 90 kms per hr.
It can't be doing the trans or anything else any good because it's a violent gear change.

Re: EL auto hard shifting probs

the most common one to fail is the s5,,it can be anywhere from $200 to $500 to repalce as they normaly do a service at the same time.

Re: EL auto hard shifting probs

Does that solenoid control all the shifts I mentioned or do they look after one shift per solenoid?

Sorry about delay to your reply; got tied up.

Re: EL auto hard shifting probs

i controls the line pressure to the other solenoids,,which is why when it goes all gear changes are rough,,it will only play up when its at operating temperature,,

Re: EL auto hard shifting probs

Thanks again. I'll go have a chat to mechanic and see if he can fix it.
