Mate whoever quoted you that must be kidding themselves!
You actually didn't need to take the fuel pump out at all... the E-Series suffer from this problem because the contacts on the sender on the fuel pump bit corrode. I've actually ran out of petrol quite a few times because of this problem as it always shows more fuel then you actually have.
There is some electrical conductive liquid stuff you can get from Jaycar which will probably fix it permanently, otherwise you may find the problem pops up now and again as the connection gets corroded.
