Re: EL Ghia or EL XR6, little help and suggestions?

Don't worry about resale value now, because as has been mentioned, an XR will hold its value better than a Ghia, however you have to pay more to start off with So either buy cheaper & sell for less for a Ghia, or pay more & get more back (hopefully) for an XR

I'd go the Ghia anyday. And if you want to see a really tough Ghia (albeit a V8), check out "Stevo"'s black EL Ghia on the other forums (.au). It's an EL Ghia with an XR front and a GT spoiler (I think), and I think the sideskirts and rear bar may be XR or GT as well... Looks fkn tough!

EL Ghia motor vs XR: 161kw/164kw <-- get an exhaust for either and they will probably end up being the same, as the Ghias have a more restrictive exhaust so start off with

EL Ghia diff vs XR: both 3.45LSD I'm lead to believe

XR has bodykit & front, but Ghia has all the interior fruit. Which is easier to swap over? A kit is waaaaay easier than trying to install a high series dash, leather interior, electric everything, etc etc

5 spd vs auto? Do a T5 conversion, or put a 3.7 or shorter diff under the EL (plus a shift kit) and it'll beat a manual no worries, while still having a good cruising RPM (due to auto's 0.68 4th gear vs T5's 0.78 5th gear...)

Best of luck with your decision! Nothing is wrong with an EL XR, but unless you're buying from new, a Ghia will be better overall value than an XR, especially when the cars are 8 years old now!

cool Re: EL Ghia or EL XR6, little help and suggestions?

Also by just sterio typing it’s a pritty safe bet the XR’s would have had a more full on life, where as a GHIA would of just motored around town, not racing commos from the traffic lights.

My Ghia doesn't fit its stereotype then

Re: EL Ghia or EL XR6, little help and suggestions?

a t5 with a 3.45 diff will.. EAT an auto wit a 3.7 diff no worries.... THe cost of getting the elXR front has to be taken into account pluss the cost of paint (not dodgy paininting) and the cost of the lower kit inc cluding painting pluss the cost of an T5 conversion including ecu.. Fairmont ghia seats may be leather, but the XR seats are a deaper bucket which are dam good to sit in. both have front power windows with the XR missingo ut on rears. Big deal the fairmont gets climate control.. if you can operate a heater control its not to hard to over come...

BUt once again its just my opinion... ...

Tomek_Ghia must be bashing his head against something with all these different opinions flying about!

I'll stick with my auto Ghia though

Re: EL Ghia or EL XR6, little help and suggestions?

I'd have to say the XR out of bias, I just bought one. While I have seen that crazy ghia on the other forums with all its mods, and do think it kicks ass on most things out there, is it worth that effort? As INJECTED250 said there's a lot to do to a ghia to get it to an xr level.

I think it basically boils down to do you prefer just performance or nearly as good performance with luxury? I've got sunroof for some reason, will put trip computer in later for sure, dont need climate control though wouldn't complain, same with woodgrain and leather.

I personally just enjoy driving the manual and like that everythings good allready, most mods are a great bonus to me like exhuast and extractors soon, and wheels and ... :)

Re: EL Ghia or EL XR6, little help and suggestions?

Welcome to the forums mate

I'm biased too :p

A lot needs doing to an XR to get it up to Ghia spec too. Probably a bit cheaper to get an XR to Ghia spec, but more stuffing around (elec everything & looms plus changing interior).

Either way you start with a good car. I started with luxury and am now chasing power, however for me there was no performance difference b/w a V8 Ghia and an auto XR8

Re: EL Ghia or EL XR6, little help and suggestions?

I have just been through this 3 months ago and settled on the EL Ghia, I'm getting Cop Shy now days, A Heritage Green Ghia with leather interior, thicker glass so it has less roadnoise and a great factory sound system. You know where i'm heading with this.
Boy racer ? XR,
Sleeper ? Ghia

It ain't all about the steering wheels, that was just an example...
What im trying to say is the XR would be.... lets say more comfortable and friendly to mods then the ghia

Thanks to everyone who has pput in some in-put it isn't an easy decision as both cars are diferent and i will be missing out on many aspects of the other car once one opf them is chosen...

As you can see both can look awesome when toyed around with..
