I have been thinking that extending the length of piping so the pod filter is closer to cool air, or even cold air dams to channel and force the air in, even though they are illegal. The gains are remarkable, really noticable, probably the best mod that anyone could do, except the price kills the excitement a bit.

Did you expand the ports an the EA head? I'm looking at doing the same but the only thing is that the size of the ports on the EA head a smaller than that on the EF intake manifold, and are too costly to get them expanded by a machinist...
The head was not machined as far as I know, but there was a few headaches around. The reason why it became an EL manifold over an EF was the A/C bracket was in the way. There were a lot of custom brackets used and the throttle cable was moved from the front of the manifold, to mid way. See my car is straight gas, so there will be a lot more problems if you are trying this mod for petrol, ie position of injectors and too small ports on the EA head, but the gas is a pressurised system so I didn't need to make the ports larger.

I'd advise you to do something about that pod filter ASAP. The EF air box is actually not too bad, and you may find that the car will run smoother with a little air intake restriction on LPG, I know my car never like a pod with hot air while on LPG.
Since you already have the intake size reduced due to the mixer, I'd say that an EF air box would probably give you the same performance of that pod, but make it easier to get a cold air intake.
If I were you i would do the following to save you throwing out the pod.
Get an EF air box. Extend your current pod filter pipe and mount the pod inside the air box. Then run the inlet pipe from the EF box to the front of the car.
As for the inlet ports, I opened mine up... something I'd recommend to anyone thinking of running this manifold as there are a few mm difference.
