Generally better cooling due to more flow. The standard belt driven fans also take power to run them (especially at high rpm), the thermos also take power because they load up the alternator however you will find that they don't run all the time (on cold days while cruising they may not come on at all), so they give you a bit more power overall.
They are easy to install. Removing the old belt drive fan can be slightly difficult sometimes but the thermo fans themselves go in very easily. If you use a davis craig thermo switch, it makes the wiring nice and easy.
