have done the mod... 2 downsides are more water in your air box... which u can just melt some flymesh or similar to the inside to reduce it... gets hot at traffic lights because of the heat temp in the engine bay... as soon as you start moving again the heat rapidly decreases... apart from that sounds alot tougher and has more throttle response... as yet i have absolutely no regrets performing this mod...

I'd want to see how it goes in summer though. I know the E series engines do get very hot, so if it starts heating up a bit in winter it won't do the engine any good. Have you thought about building wings out of it to catch the cool air coming in. It's hard to explain what i mean. But say you have metal scoops coming out of each hole facing forward, this should force more air in. Just an idea, dont know if it will make any difference but in theory it should.

I've just performed the mod to my car. I'm usually pretty sceptical about mods like these ones, but to my amazement my car has gained a lot of power. The throttle response has improved by a lot, so in my opinion this mod is well worth it especially because its free.

I did a simlar mod a while back by cutting another air hole in the front of the air box above the filter instead of below it as the other threads pics show and running a tube to the front of the car above the head light then putting a K.N filter in the box.
I gained a resonable power increase and no worries about things getting in to the air box by cuttting below the box.
