hi there, have a 96 EF wagon on which I had the sump gasket done(?) by a mechanic who has since shut up shop about 2 months ago. The car was fine until I did a 600k trip upon which I noticed a slight oil burning smell which at first was noticeable after long distance runs but in the last 2 weeks is constant. My husband is working away and my son is not very cluey about mechanics so how can I get an honest evaluation of the problem , being female seems to be a great chance to be hoodwinked when it comes to cars. I know to get a look at possible leaks , the car should be degreased but when I first took the car through a carwash,(one of those that wash underneath) it cost me $120 fo a new coil pack, so is there a way I can avoid that too? Thanks in advance

Without trying to diagnose your problem, what about this? Are you in an auto club (NRMA, RACV, RAA) etc.? Most have a free member diagnosis service where you can get an unbiassed report on your problem - some even over the phone. But in your case I think an inspection is a better idea. Other than that, approach a repairer who displays a motoring organisation endorsement out front. At least with one of those you should be treated fairly. And always - get two opinions!

My EB started dumping oil at an amazing rate. All of the sump bolts had become finger tight. Probably due to gasket shrinkage.

I nipped all of them up and the car now uses a lot less oil.
