Hey guys, i'm in the market for a decent daily car that is just that little bit special. I've found a 185kw EL XR8 for sale with the manual box (a must have.)

Anyways, the thing is dirt cheap (i'm talking only $6k), bloody awesome condition and looks the goods. There's always a catch and in this case it has 300 thousand on the clock. Hence why it's 50% the price of a low km one.

What i'm wondering is what you guys think of the idea? He claims both donk and box feel strong, but 300k is scary. Having said that, $6k is chicken feed for a nice car....

If something is likely to go wrong with it at this many km's (engine) what will it be?

Alternatively what sort of $ am I looking at for a replacement engine (prefer AU series if possible?) Or will it have more issues than just engine/box in the near future?

I have a two owner (I'm 2nd owner) el six cyl with 230,000 kms on it and it has all sorts of stuff going wrong every month. And it was regularly serviced and looked after.

Electrical, engine management, auto, you name it. Nice to drive but too many miles on it in my view.

Your car may be ok but be prepared to fork out money if it's not.

300k is almost run int . it will go over 500k before it needs work uless you thrash badly , I changed the motor in my EL at 580k .. says it all.

Hey, an engine rebuild can be as expensive (or cheap) as you like. 300k should not matter unless its had a hard life. Its probably got a T5 tranny, not hugely expensive to repair/replace either. Clutch is probably shagged tho'.
No point in going to an AU engine as it's essentially its the same engine.
