Yo, ive got a Ford El, needing a new sump seal.. any1 got step by steps, i know how to do it, i just need to know if i need to take any precausions, eg drain oil first rather than taking out sump with oill.. ???
I reckon you'd want to be sure that it is the sump gasket that is leaking. Have you positively identified the source of the leak? In general oil leaks occur from the rear main crankshaft seal (or maybe the front seal), the sump seals don't usually give a lot of trouble. Is there an oil trace emenating from the area right at the back of the sump? It usually trickles down the underside of the oil pan and collects at the lowest point near the drain plug.
If you think it is the rear main, you might like to rethink doing the sump gasket. It may be a whole lot of work for no result.
im sure its the seal, ive cleaned the area with degreaser and i can see the leak start from the seal and trickle down the side of the pan, and trickles down to the sump bolt. its how i knew it was leaking, i followed the drip and it stopped at the sump seal.
G'day. Not doubting your diagnosis mate, but consider this. The sump gasket is over 1 cm wide. The oil that is behind it is splash oil only from the crank whipping around. There is no oil under pressure, like around the rear main for example. How would the splash oil penetrate the relatively wide gasket and leak down the outside of the sump? Are there any leaks higher up? Is the sump over full?
Just trying to save you a whole lotta unnecessary work. Think carefully about how oil might get past the sump seal. Good hunting.
fordboy98, good point, i tightened the sump bolts, they were a turn to a turn and a half lose, so hopefully they wont leak. as i cleaned and checked the block again it appears to be coming from an oil sensor?? it sits between the coil and the distributor, would that be an oil sensor?? would be great if i had a side diagram so i know what it is!!, maybee that o-ring is stuffed.
i had to take off the air system to see that its coming from the sensor, from under thec ar it really looked like its coming from the sump
Bingo!! You may well have found it. In that area on the left of the motor in front of ther coil is the oil pressure switch. It operates your oil warning light. When the engine develops enough pressure, the switch operates and extinguishes the warning lamp on the dash. No oil pressure or dangerously low, and the light is on. Inside the switch there is a small diaphragm with oil pressure on one side and switch contacts on the other. Most times when they leak (and they can really spew oil out if they fail) it is because the diaphragm has ruptured. Easy to fix, just replace it - about $10.00. A hint too - remove the air box to get at it. It's in a pig of a position. You may need a 26mm socket to grab hold of it. And they will still work if they are stuffed.
k, replaced it with a new oil pressure switch. $10 :), it was tricky because it was 25mm(old one), and new one was 24mm, had to get a long socket to fit over the connecter.
