probs with my old ea - Ford Forums - Mustang Forum, Ford Trucks, Ford Focus and Ford Cars

hey everyone,

my brother now owns my old ea fairmont ghia and it has a few issues at the moment,

on sat morining he got a 2.5 inch sports exhaust put on because the 2.1/4 exhaust had shat itself

anyway got it home and it was running like a dog so we changed the plugs and done an oil change, but it made no difference,

on gas its running real rough, backfiring throught the air box and stalling, on petrol its running rough and blowing constant black smoke

so i cleaned the idle speed controller but that made no difference, and today i changed the map sensor but that also made no difference, im all out of ideas

the car is undrivable, so what do u guys think the prob can be??

My money would be on the timing.
You could check the oxy sensor is plugged in, though I've never seen it actually affect a car's running that much.
The other thing is if the exhaust is leaking/partially blocked?

naa i havent checked the timing, dont have anything to check it with, it could be the leads, they havent been replaced in a while,

the problem was there before the exhaust was put on, but now the car is basically undrivable

oxy sensor is another good suggestion, ill check these things out tomorrow or tuesday, thanks for the advice guys!

Yer timing I'd say then.
Mark the dizzy position, then loosen the dizzy and twist it slowly while the car is idling, when it runs its quickest the timing is good.

map sensor disconnected? explains the black smoke, doesnt explain the gas problems though...

The zorst guys should have disconnected the battery (when they were welding), sounds to me like the ECU is having dramas. A proper reset should fix it. Hopefully that is.

naa the map sensor wasnt disconnected, i changed it over but it made no difference,

although it runs like my el did when the vaccume hose came off my map sensor, rough idle, huge fuel consuption, black smoke, but it didnt make any difference,

it could be caus of the battery being disconnected, but the problem of backfiring, stalling, black smoke bla bla bla has been like that for a while, it just got a shit load worse on saturday, to the point that u cannot drive it

I still reckon its the timing, the exhaust would have changed the balance of the motor.
