stupid falcon driving me nuts

wont idle below 1100rpm, uses heaps of gas, (50 bucks gone in about 150 km) replaced air filter, fuel filter, because they were old, the plugs were old and corroded, so was the distributer cap and rotor, so I replaced those, also has had a new battery recently, lowish kms, and good oil. any one got any tips on what to look for? its a 1992 eb2

The consumption has definately increased lately until it is way over the top, today the fuel light came on, went straight to the gas station and put in $20 around 12 ltr(coz thats all I had) reset the odo, 49kms later the fuel light comes on again, I would normally expect about 100 kms for that amount of petrol, thats what it should get around town 12l/100km, not 20l/100km

Re: stupid falcon driving me nuts

Hi
Is it an I6 or a V8? If it's not blowing black smoke and drives ok once off idle I would be checking for vacuum leaks, and a big one. If it blows smoke and drives like it's on 4 cylinders look at the fuel pressure to see if it's too high (possible regulator) or at the MAP sensor. cheers

Re: stupid falcon driving me nuts

I had the same thing with my EAII. Used about 20L/100k, I replaced everything I could with my money available (spent about $500 on the motor). My idling problem was a dirty throttle position sensor connector (located near the throttle body under my air filter). I tested everything, even after warming up I could not get a closed loop voltage on the O2 sensor (meant it was not going into closed loop mode, so I couldn't even get good 'kilometreage' down the highway.

I ended up driving it hard for a month out of frustration and kept pumping fuel into, and it came good by itself. It has run like a dream for the last 3 years now. The problem was it was sitting for a year without being driven before I bought it. The motor had very old oil in it which would not have helped, it's still probably cleaning gunk out with each oil change now. The lifters get quieter with each oil change.

well I did wipe a whole lot of black gunk out of the throttle body, so maybe I upset it, who knows the proceedure for testing the o2 sensor and stuff?
