I did this mod when I had my 3 speed (in fact I'll have to do it again ) but I had difficulty aligning it to the right angle. Ended up getting my mechanic of the time to do it.
I believe the shifter is actually derived from the early Laser.

And all the mechanic would have done is wind it all the way down, wind it back out until it was straight and then do the locking nut up.

I did this mod ages ago with my old EA. It's the little things like this that make a difference. Interestingly my EL Ghia came with a EB T-bar handle in the glovebox
