Hello all, new to this forum.
This weekend i have fixed my head. i ran out of water and the head gasket ****ed, so i got the head reconditioned, put it all back together, and started her up and its making a ticking sound.
Ive got a Ford El 96 model. I know the tappets are self adjusting but does it take a while to adjust or something?

Your Help would be much appreciated.

Hi mate
They don't take that long to adjust themselves. If you go for a 10-15 minutes drive that should be long enough, unless... you overheated the engine real bad and damaged the oil seals inside the lifters (they get too hard and crack when you overheat them) or you actually pulled the lifters from inside the rocker arms and forgot the little spacers that go at the bottom or there's no oil getting to the top of your engine due to a blockage in the oil gallery (happens sometimes when you buff the block trying to get rid of the old gasket). Check that you're getting oil at the top of the engine before you keep driving around, if this is ok try doing an oil and filter change, if the noise is still there try to locate which lifter or lifters are making the noise (a long hose comes in handy for this) and replace them. Tomorrow i shall go around the block a couple times and wait for it to go away. i wont be doing it now cause ive got an oil leek i wanna suss out during the sun light hours.
