As a long time reader of this board and a personal friend of Mr Jack Travis, I was astounded to see a EA driver who had been a contributing member for so long can a decent car (for the price range) which many people on this board and outside this board love.
First of all, I would like to point out that I drive a Jap car. However, I am not a ricer. I drive a 1990 Australian deilvered Toyota MR2 (Ferrari shape) N/A, which I am completely in love with, as many of you are with your cars.
For what it's worth, I like my cars standard. I'm not into 17 inch wheels (though they can look good) and I despise body kits unless they're factory.
In fact the only "mods" that I have done are: tints, black widow alarm, new Panasonic MP3 deck, GM Quarts splits and JBL rear speakers (stereo gear yet to be installed) and a coin and cup holder console from an overseas MR2 turbo.
The only mods planned for the future are: 15 inch wheels from 1994-1999 MR2 Bathurst and GT, fix all the minor electrical problems which comprises of fixing cruise control and re-gas and service air con.
The rest of the car is staock standard.
When you look at the EA, you cannot expect it to be up to the standards of some of its competitors of the time, such as a Merc or even a Toyota Cressida. This is because the EA didn;t have as much capital injected into it as some of its competitors. Also Ford was in a bit of a fix, the decision was almost passed that the EA would be based on the Mazda 626 of the time (imagine a FWD Falcon!!!). So we should celebrate the fact that the EA you see today went ahead as a RWD chassis.
UGLY:
I have always felt that the best feature of the EA was it's styling. Very rounded for the time, smooth and apparently areodynamic. Of course the EA GL doesn;t look as good as an EA Ghia, but name a base model from any make or model that looks as good as say a mid range model.
Next time you have a drive take a look at the other cars on the road that are around the same age and tell me if you think they look better than an EA in standard form.
UNRELIABLE:
Generally speaking, Japanese car makers make the most reliable cars in the world (i.e. LExus LS400

) However, E series cars are generally good in this respect (except for the BTR auto trans maybe) and the parts are dirt cheap. For what it's worth I was seriously considering a ED or EF XR6, until I found out that I could afford the MR2 which is a more of a sports car, more relaible (though parts will be more expensive than a Falcon) and to my eyes is THE best looking car for its time (aside from the Porsche 911).
Oversized:
if there is a problem with the size of the car, buy a Corolla. The size was one reason I didn;t buy a Falcon.
underpowered:
Compare the power figures to a car of a similar age and a similar price.
Also lets not forget how well a stock EA S MPFI with the T5 did against a fully dun up Pulsar on the drag strip. I think the EA beat it, albiet by a nose.
Sorry for the long post people, but I thought you needed an unbiased post like this one from someone who is on the outside of the club looking in and not a necessarily a Australian car enthusiast (I do respect some of them though), but rather a uni student who aspires to owning the ultimate sports car one day, the 911.
