XH XR8 doing stupid things while trying to check timing.

Hi guys.

I am having trouble trying to setting the timing on my XH XR8 ute. It has the same 185kw engine as the EL xr8 I believe. When I bridge the two pins on the diagnostics plug and start the car it is supposed to rev to 2000rpm for a while then return back to idle, instead it revs to about 1700rpm then returns to idle then revs up to about 1850rpm and returns back to idle. I can't even see the timing marker. The only thing I can put it down to is that the timing is retarded to the point that it's affecting the idle bringing it down to 1700 - 1800rpm instead of 2000rpm and that it isn't even near the timing marker?
I do have a poo timing light that flashes a red light instead of white but I am setting it in the dark so it should show up.

Any ideas?
