Hey all,
I have read about the problems faced when trying to install a Dual exhaust into an XE sedan.... Now I wasnt worrying to much because some people have it working etc.... I have just visited the local pro and he says go single 3" for sure.
He reacons the dual systems you make work in an XE are not good enough. The pipes are too small, the the heat shield is not worth moving etc, alot for $$$ for not much gain.
Now i knew it would be hard but i didn't think the mods would be so expensive and painfull!!
He recommends tri-ys for my setup, but i have a free set of 1 7/8 tuned length which i will be using...
SO finally my question is, what you guys think the difference between a Single 3" with tuned length extractors (pacemaker) compared to twin 2".
I will loose some bottom end from the tuned length, but i am hoping I might gain this back with the single system?....
will a 2v 351c, still have a mean note through a single? just not loud enough?
thanks for the help guys, I was really hoping for the dual but for the $$ its wort,h i think single is just easier!
I wanted dual 2.5" on the XD ute and Midas wanted me to go to a single 2.5". I did but should have stayed with the duals. Duals with my cam of 220 deg sounded tough but I have read people like Ivan Walker suggest single over duals because of the
"Fords funny firing order" ??? I believe Midas suggested it cos it was too hard for them to bend the duals !!! My view only !!!
well there are a couple reasons, the spare tyre will need modding, or they can come out the same side. But still the plastic fuel tank has probs. Heatshield can stop this slightly but not enough.
The current shield between the stnd exhaust and the tank has the be modded aswell.
I know why he didn't want dual, I would guess it to be about $500 more in labour
which i dont think, its worth...therefore how much diff is there?
anyone here with a single 3" with tuned length and they are happy?
I know clevo's and dual are great, unhappy :(
i was happy with the single 2 1/2" on my XE but had almost std cam(gas cam) didn't rev much more than 5 grand anyway, if you've got a bigger cam i reckon 3" single will be nice.
you can have loud if you want, its just muffler choice
personally i prefer single on a clevo i think tyey sound meaner
I've had all three of the poll suggestions over the years, so I can tell you the pros and cons...
For all out grunt and the best performing exhaust go dual 3inch finishing at the diff and install an x pipe to help bottom end. But it is noisy, mine booms a fair bit especially at idle but I love it. Scares people.. Legalities? I just avoid high profile places.
The single system is not the best sound, definately gives you a more torquey bottom end response at the expense of less top end. Be my choice for a stockie, near stockie or for towing.
You can't fit a really big twin system all the way back on XD/E's because the tail pipes need to come out the same side and clear the tank. Some say they can do it but I've yet to actually see one! If you've got a fairly hot clevo and need to run twin 2 1/2 or 3in pipe then ending it at the diff is really the only choice.
But pracy with your engine specs a nice twin 2inch or 2 1/4 IMO would be the better choice over a single system. The note is better and so is overall performance, only draw back is slightly less off idle torque (compared to a single).
With ease a twin 2inch can be fitted no hassles. More fiddly for a twin 2 1/4 but not impossible. If I wasn't prepared to end the system at the diff I would definately go that way. Worth the the hassle of moving heat shield etc. You'd be happier in the long run.
A few engine combo's ago I had a similiar spec motor to yours and it ran great with Tri-y's, twin Perry's and twin 2inch and H pipe. Had a good note and much better top end than the 3inch single system on it previously.
If you go for a twin system definately use an x-pipe though and research the best place to put it as it can make a huge difference.
As to the 4:1's I changed over to a set whilst I had the twin 2inch system on. Despite beliefs to the contrary, I noticed no loss of torque, only gains everywhere.
The 1 7/8 ones you have are the biggest 2V size you can get though and are probably over kill. But since they are free you may as well use them and spend the money you save on the Tri-y's on the rest of the system.
if ur in sydney and want a single 3 inch exhaust ive got one that i had on the car for about 3-4 months then changed to dual 3" as i was chasing a lot more horsepower than i originally started with
Go the tuned freebies + xpipe and and twin 2.5 either dumping at the diff or into a 3" single to the rear bumper (legalities). 1 7/8 may be a little large for your combo but I'd rather have those than tri-y's. Normal "over the diff" pipes really get crushed from the pipe bender. Compared to mandrel bent ones there really is no comparison.
I agree that its an urban myth that 4:1's kill your low end. I bet you'll be overly impressed with the finished product. I just fitted 1 3/4" tuned pacemakers, x pipe and twin 2.5" mandrel bent system and picked up 40+hp. Has more potential but I have other issues. (Had tri-y's and single 2 1/4" exit and cam just a tad bigger than yours).
Twin 3" would be too big for your combo (only going to 5500).
Spare tyre well, cut it out! Plastic fuel tank, get rid of it! A pain in the arrrse job, but possible!
