Catalytic Converter HELP!

I was hoping someone could help me.

I recently bought a car for my daughter—a 1997 Ford Probe, 4 Cyl (2.0L). After having it a short while, the check engine light came on. I took it to a local garage and they told me that it read out “1st bank catalytic converter”. Then they said that meant that there were 2 converters—one in the back and one in the front and this was the one in the front. And, that while the one in the back is available aftermarket, only Ford makes the one in the front for $500+!!!!!!

Is this true? I have looked online and I only see 1 catalytic converter listed. And it lists some “Universal” and “Aftermarket” ones for <$150. Are there 2, or only 1 with 2 sections? And could I legitimately use one of the non-Ford OEM ones? If I can use an aftermarket one are the O2 sensors still hooked up?

I appreciate any guidance that you can offer.

Thanks,

Ed

Re: Catalytic Converter HELP!

The check engine light would refer to the 02 sensors, not the cat.

You must have 1 in front of the cat and 1 behind the cat.
