Ive just rebuilt my 351 cleveland. Its in an XE, Can anyone recomend an exhaust size and system. The motor is fairly stock. Im not sure if I should run a single 2.5", 3" or a dual 2".
I want to avoid the draining sound, but I'd like to generate a decent note.

Decent note? Well I've just fitted Pacemaker Tri-Ys and a full 2" dual system with one can per side and... oh my... if you email me I'll send you a quick file of before (standard manifolds, 2.5" single system with 1 can) and after. It sounds awesome - not too loud, but very throaty and almost silent at idle...

either the 2.5 inch single or 2 inch dual will sound deep if used with staright through mufflers (its a stock motor, stock cam, stock heads so it wont be excessive). Extractors wont make the world of difference and on some clevelands can make it quiter.

i've had both a 2" twin and 2 1/2" single on the same engine, the twin wins hands down for sound. the twin system still exited on the drivers side.
to stop droning you'll need a resonator.
I've never had a single system on a clevo probably never will. If you want it deeper? Fit hotdogs at the end of the pipes I've done that on a few of my cars the hotdog removed the crackle and made it a deep rumble.

My ex had a Mulberry XBGS coupe just like the one on the Xb sales broucher. When we got it it had a 302 C4 with a new 2 1/2" single. Getting in it from my Landau -twin 2 1/4" - it sounded like shit and didn't go that well. When mine started getting some more power - I stepped up to a twin 2 1/2" and she begged me for the old twin for hers. We bolted it up and I took it for a drive - this thing suddenly screamed. The single/twin debate was over in the breif moment I nailed the throttle and the back wheels blazed all through 1st gear and into 2nd...
I would never go back to a single on a Cleveland again
