confused EPA and Modified Exhaust

I have just had the beast called up for an EPA noise level and emission testing. Firstly it failed the noise level test by 3 Db. Bugger. Now because of the Helix plate and there lack of understanding how it works they now want to do an emission test. What a pain. I just want to know who else in the sydney area is having the same hassells. 90 Db is not a lot to play with. I left the headers and cats on and changed the rest of the system and it still failed. So much for keeping 380 rwhp. Don't get me wrong this is not a go at the EPA, but geez!!!!!!!!

I cant believe someone contributing such fine automotive music would be treated in such a way!

seriously, great informative thread GTP193, these issues tend to spread interstate quickly. I haven't heard of this south of the border as yet, but if its happening up there...........................

Re: EPA and Modified Exhaust

I had the same thing happen to me when I had my EB.
I received the letter in the mail. A cop lodged a complaint with the EPA as he thought it was too load as I drove past him. The exhaust was tested and passed. I was out of pocket $50 for the test.

Its just a pain to have to make the time to take the car to get tested.

This was a few years ago and it was in Melbourne.

Re: EPA and Modified Exhaust

The maxium allowable Db is 90 @ 4300 rpm. My XR 8 ute ran 93Db. This was measured at throttle back off. As a side note i was not pulled over for noise, but a EPA officer saw and heard the ute drive past and suspected it my be higher than allowed, and no i was not boy racing, i was in peak hour trafic travelling at about 50K' It now turns out that anyone can put in a complaint to the EPA and they will investigate. As a further note a stock standard XR8 ute @ 4300rpm will register 89Db at back off. These figures are for NSW only. Atleast i will get a free Dyno test when they do the emmission test LMAO.

Re: EPA and Modified Exhaust

I don't think thay use a dyno.
They didn't for my car, they just stuck a probe in the exhaust and reved the engine to ???RPM

edit:
And also had a mic behind the exhaust

Re: EPA and Modified Exhaust

In NSW they have this wizz bang muti million $ peace of equipment that will even read a Fart LOL. Guess they need to justify the cost .The car will be tested in cold start mode and running temp mode. They now use sensors and mirrors and things. It will be the same test that are done when a motor vehicle company designs a new car. There appears to be a big witch hunt here at the moment.

Welcome to the democratic dictatorship of Australia. So does this mean that the Helix plate contributed to the extra noise, or was it the system? Surely if it is the system, then under the trade practices act you are entitled to have the car put back to standard at the expense of the SUPPLIER

Why not have a go at the EPA they have a go at everyone they can

Re: EPA and Modified Exhaust

Don't feel too bad about it your car should be pretty easy to get through, it took me 2 years of trying to finally make the EPA happy with my XD. Quite a few times brand new cars won't pass it has happened to Holden, Mitsubishi & even the Toyota Echo that I know of & if your car is over 3 years old forget it.
Not much you can do about it they seem to have a pretty free reign to do what they want but at least they don't charge you for the priveledge like they do in some states. Just remember it next time you vote in a state election.
