Exhaust leak at the manifold

I have an '02 E350 with the 5.4L V8. It has a broken exhaust manifold stud at the rear of the manifold on the passenger side. Someone has told me that it is a common problem because of the head and exhaust manifold being made of different metals and expanding at different rates. Has anyone else heard of this being common or even happening at all under normal driving conditions?
